Jordan Securities Commission JSC
Financial institution in Amman
The establishment of public shareholding companies in Jordan began in the early 1930s, with three major companies founded during that period: the Arab Bank, the Tobacco and Cigarettes Company, and the Electricity Company. Since then, the Jordanian public has been subscribing to and trading shares of these companies.
In the absence of an organized market for securities trading, transactions were conducted through non-specialized offices or what is known in financial market literature as the unregulated market. With the increasing number of public shareholding companies and the government's expansion in issuing public debt instruments, the need for an organized market emerged, as called for by successive development plans. This was followed by significant efforts and numerous studies, leading to the establishment of the Amman Financial Market under Law No. (31) of 1976. It commenced its first official day of operation as an organized securities market on 1/1/1978, with its primary objectives being to develop national savings through investment in securities, direct savings to serve the national economy, and regulate and oversee the issuance and trading of securities in a manner that ensures the safety, ease, and speed of such transactions. The Amman Financial Market played two key roles: that of a regulatory authority for the capital market and that of a traditional stock exchange for securities.
Since its inception, the Amman Financial Market has taken significant steps in the local capital market, achieving substantial progress in meeting its set goals, which has earned it a prestigious position among emerging markets in the region and the world.
