The 55th edition of the fair was visited by 4\,785\,539 visitors.\\n\\nIt began in 1969\, at a time when Cairo was celebrating its millennium\, so the then Minister of Culture\, Tharwat Okasha\, decided to celebrate the occasion culturally\, entrusting the writer and researcher Soheir El-Qalamawi with supervising the establishment of the first book fair. For this reason\, the 2008 edition celebrated El-Qalamawi as the Personality of the Year.
